Radiation Badge Failures recorded as Administrative Doses of 0.000rem/hr

The Director of the Defense Nuclear Agency, Vice Admiral Monroe stated in his Introduction to the Radiological Cleanup of Enewetak Atoll documentary for readers to keep in mind “the authors generally have a DOD affiliation.”

This statement was proven to be especially true in the Fact Book prepared by JTG Commander COL Bauchspies for the DNA Commander General Tate’s May 1979 visit to Enewetak Atoll.

The Fact Book revealed that no film badges were used before June 1977. 80% to 100% failed between June 1977 through September 1978. 90% to 100% failed between September 1978 through February 1979. And 49% failed between February 1979 through March 1979.

In response to the failed devices, the U.S. Surgeon General’s office calculated the administrative doses to replace the failed radiation device readings.

However, the Defense Nuclear Agency discarded the Surgeon General’s administrative doses and replaced them with their own radiation exposure calculations and decided most of the readings should show 0.000 r/hr.

Administrative radiation dosages of 0.000 r/hr were usually documented instead of noting device failures.
